Our talk explores the ways that Opera Houses transformed the cities of Paris and Sydney. One full of vivid personality and wit, and envisaged at the end of a grand boulevard, where well-dressed Opera goers gossip in a scintillating manner - The Paris Opera (1861-75), designed by Charles Garnier . The other a modern monument that brings citizens together within its spectacular harbourside location – Jorn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House.
Dr Peter Kohane teaches history and design in the program of Architecture at the University of New South Wales. He is the author of monographs and articles on many architects and theoretical topics, including James Barnet, Louis Kahn, Edmond and Corrigan, and James Fergusson.
