Join Archaeologist Iain Shearer on a journey to Samarkand. ‘Golden Samarkand’ dominated Central Asia for millennia. Alexander the Great marvelled at Marakanda - before scorching it from the earth. Reborn as Afrosiyab and then devastated by Mongols, Samarkand was chosen by Timur Leng as his grand capital, bedecking it with jewels including a mosque dedicated to his favourite wife and a stunning royal cemetery. Timur’s successors continued beautifying their city, including the great Registan, enchanting Lord Curzon to proclaim, ‘the finest ensemble of Islamic buildings in the entire world!’
