Margel Hinder: Modern in Motion is the first dedicated retrospective of one of the most important and dynamic, yet underrated, Australian sculptors of the 20th century. The exhibition, presented in collaboration with Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne, showcases an arresting array of sculptures produced by Hinder over five decades of her career.
Join Denise Mimmocchi, curator of the exhibition, for this fascinating lecture exploring Hinder’s career from the 1930s to the 1970s and the distinct contribution she made to the movements of modern art in Australia.
Born in Brooklyn, and initiating her sculpture studies in America, it was after migrating to Australia in 1934 that Margel Hinder’s mature practice flourished. Working in Sydney, she became a pioneer of new forms of small scale and monumental public sculpture and introduced a dynamic new language of modern sculpture to Australian art.
