What are the fundamentals of restoration and why was it debated so vigorously in the 19th Century? What was at stake then and why is it so difficult to locate history in our contemporary architectural design culture now? Drawing on the debates of the Victorian period that emerged as a counterpoint to early industrial modernism, this lecture will explore a range of architecture restoration, focused on the question Where did restoration as we understand it today come from?
