Elsa Schiaparelli’s sophisticated vision is the best-known form of Surrealism and fashion. Friend of Salvador Dali and Louis Aragon, she revolutionised women’s fashion, creating some of the most iconic 20th century collaborations of art and fashion. She played with illusion and the ‘feminine masquerade’ to create enduring fashion icons. From gloves with claws to the famed lobster dress, Schiap’s vision was copied around the world. See how her ‘self-staging’ fed into future art and fashion ‘performance’ and photography by artists including Meret Oppenheim, Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and K8Hardy.
