Japanese lacquerware has been a traditional decorative art form for millennia. Made from the sap of the lacquer tree, it is poisonous until it dries and can only be handled by master craftsmen. This lecture will explore traditional Japanese lacquerwork as well as the development of lacquerware items as symbols of luxury for European taste.
