Art Appreciation 2022 - Colonial trash to island treasure: remaking European porcelain in Caribbean fine and decorative arts

Art Appreciation 2022 - Pomp and Ceremony

01 April 2022 - 06 July 2022 -
This lecture looks at the many lives of chaney, the historic pottery shards buried in the sand and soil on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. A hybrid of the words for ‘china’ and ‘money’, chaney refers to the fragments of European ceramics brought to St. Croix by the island’s former colonisers: England, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Often unearthed after heavy rain, chaney is hunted by artisans who repurpose the shards into high-end jewellery. Chaney’s transformation from imported ceramic ware to locally produced jewellery crafted from found objects is seen by many as symbol of resistance that speaks to the island’s history of colonisation and slavery. The lecture examines chaney’s colonial past and its present life as a thriving mode of cultural and artistic production.
