Explore how the Sienese pride themselves on their special relationship with the mother of God - ever since they won a seemingly impossible victory against Florence by pledging their city to the protection of the Virgin. Together we will explore the roots of the Sienese cultural belief that it is in part art, that has ensured that the Virgin Mary would always favour ‘her’ city above all others. This lecture concentrates on the two key sites of Sienese energy and pride, the cathedral and the town hall. From the famous fan-shaped Campo (piazza) to Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s bustling townscape, art has shaped civic consciousness, and trumpeted Siena’s honour and dignity to the outside world.
