Explore art, war and death in the Italian Renaissance in this outstanding presentation by art historian Dr John Gagne, now available as an online lecture.
Originally presented at the Gallery as part of our highly regarded Art Appreciation lecture series Love, sex and death: The constant companions of art, this lecture has been made available for you to enjoy online from the comfort of your home
In 1512, a 22 year old French prince, Gaston de Foix (1489-1512), died in battle at Ravenna. This talk explores the death of Gaston through the monumental, yet unfinished marble tomb project sculpted by the great Lombard sculptor, Agostino Busti, called Il Bambaia (1483-1548). We explore the geopolitics of war-torn Italy, the life and works of the artist, the military career of the prince, and the remaining fragments of one of the most intriguing and finely-wrought tombs of the Italian Renaissance.
Book now until 5pm Friday 27 August for instant online access. Lectures will be available for viewing online at your own pace until 5pm Monday 30 August (access instructions will be provided upon booking).
