Art Appreciation 2022 - Celebrating Bonaparte: Jacques-Louis David’s The Coronation of Napoleon - online

Art Appreciation 2022 - Pomp and Ceremony

28 October 2022 - 27 January 2023 -
The subject of this lecture is Jacques-Louis David’s massive painting of the coronation and consecration of Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of the French in 1804. We will explore not only the event itself, but how David’s ambitious work tried to convey what was at stake in this most pompous and complex of ceremonies. We will also consider what happened to the painting and how we might make sense of it today.

Professor Mark Ledbury is the Power Professor of Art History and Visual Culture and director of the Power Institute at the University of Sydney.
