Fashion was central to the new art of the French Impressionists. 19th century Paris, the capital of fashion, with its boulevards and department stores, the new medium of photography, the great expansion of fashion magazines and advertising transformed the artistic output of Manet, Caillebotte, Renoir, Cassatt, Morisot and Monet. As museums expanded, critics argued that fashion could learn from paintings and aspire to art’s status. How did this lead to a revolution in fashion design and the need for the haute couture system?
