Sodeisha: Connected to Australia and Charles Blackman
Join us for a day trip to Newcastle Art Gallery and Maitland Regional Art Gallery. First stop is Newcastle Art Gallery to see 'SODEISHA: connected to Australia'. Newcastle Art Gallery is custodian of one of the largest collections of Sodeisha ceramics outside of Japan. The exhibition features contemporary ceramic artists from Australia and Japan exhibited alongside the Gallery’s Sodeisha collection to form a dialogue between this important post war avant-garde movement and contemporary ceramic arts practice today.
In the afternoon, we will travel to Maitland Regional Gallery for a guided tour of 'Charles Blackman' from the Maitland Regional Art Gallery collection. Charles Blackman was one of Australia’s iconic artists and a strong supporter of Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) who donated more than 280 works on paper and paintings to the MRAG Collection. Charles Blackman died in August 2018 and this exhibition pays tribute to the artist’s life, work and legacy to Maitland.
Morning and afternoon tea provided. Lunch is not included and is at your leisure, take the opportunity to explore Newcastle’s café culture along Darby Street, or bring your own and enjoy a stroll in the nearby parks.
