In this lecture we will analyse the famous Ditchley portrait of Elizabeth I by Marcus Gheeraerts by examining the man who commissioned it. This fascinating portrait, full of enigmatic references and layers of symbolism, was closely associated with the lavish festivities organised by Lee in 1592 in the Queen's honour. The portrait and pageant form a particularly fascinating example of the relationship between the Queen and her courtiers, in which sanctity and sovereignty were united.
