The kimono is an enduring symbol of traditional Japanese culture and offers us a social history across the Heian, Edo and Meiji periods. Delve into Japan’s rich textile history and hear how the fabric, pattern, thread, print and colour of the kimono symbolised the social rank and refinement of the wearer. This lecture will also explore the development of the Obi – the sash worn with a kimono – as an artform in itself.
