“You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today”
~ Marvin Gaye 'What’s Going On' 1970

People fortunate enough to be born or live in Western countries from late 20th to early 21st centuries, enjoy lives – despite modern media reports – that have never been less violent. Depictions of peace in our pre-modern world are especially extraordinary, illustrating a desire that seemed unobtainable when (masculine) power derived from prowess at war. From the Buddhist Bimaran Casket of Afghanistan, to medieval Armenian depictions of Noah on Ararat, this lecture illustrates the contradictions of peace in a world of war.
